Learning to drive is not just about driving
Learning to drive can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — especially when the usual approach does not quite fit.
This small-group workshop is designed to help neurodivergent learner drivers and the people supporting them better understand where to start, what to expect, and how to build safer confidence behind the wheel.
Saturday 11 July | 10:00 AM – 12 PM |

Learning to drive is not just about driving
For many neurodivergent learners, learning to drive can involve much more than learning road rules and operating a car.
There may be anxiety, sensory overwhelm, processing demands, communication differences, confidence challenges, or uncertainty about where to begin.
Parents, carers and supervising drivers can also feel unsure about how to help, how quickly to move, what to expect, and when extra support may be needed.
This workshop has been created to give families a clearer, calmer starting point.

The workshop will begin with a gentle introduction to driving and neurodiversity, including why the learner driver journey may feel different for some people.
Sue Tyler from Drive Safe Southern will share practical driver training insights, including common challenges, helpful strategies and what a more supported approach can look like for neurodivergent learners.
Brian Speed will then speak about learner driver safety, logbooks and the important role of supervising drivers.
There will also be time to discuss OT driving assessments, support pathways and general questions from families.
Sue Tyler is a long-time Southern Highlands local who is passionate about helping people gain confidence, independence and opportunity through supportive driver education. Sue brings specialist driving instruction experience and a practical understanding of how to support learners who may need a different approach.

Brian Speed has a long history in working as Road Safety Officer at Wingecarribee Shire Council, as well as conducting diver safety trainin for various types of motorists. Brian will contribute to road safety education, including learner driver safety, logbook requirements and the role of supervising drivers.

Together, the session will help families better understand the driving journey from both a safety and neurodiversity-informed perspective.
