MEET OUR AWESOME TEAM

The heart of Neuro Awesome is our incredible volunteers—people who give their time, passion, and care to create safe, welcoming spaces. Some live this experience every day as proud members of the neurodiverse community.

Every conversation, every event, and every resource we share is shaped by their empathy, lived experience, and commitment to inclusion.

MEET THE FOUNDER & CEO

Hey, I'm Carolina

Hi, I’m Carolina Jimenez. Neuro Awesome is more than a project to me—it’s personal, it’s a calling, and it’s a community I feel deeply honoured to be part of.

Neurodiversity came into my life as a gift in the form of my daughter, Sofia—my little mini-me. She was born to a father on the spectrum long before I even knew what that really meant. That experience opened my eyes, my heart, and my world to the beauty, complexity, and resilience of neurodivergent lives.

This movement began with the idea of helping neurodivergent people find love. Along the way, I realised the first step wasn’t always romance—it was belonging. It was creating safe, stigma-free environments where people could show up as themselves, meet others who “get it,” and build friendships, confidence, and community.

I believe every person deserves to feel valued, understood, and embraced for exactly who they are. Through Neuro Awesome, I’m committed to building not just events, but a legacy of inclusion, awareness, and joy—for Sofia, for our community, and for every neurodivergent individual seeking a place that feels like home.

Director, Education & Community Capacity

Hey, I'm Carol

I’m Carol and I’m very excited to be a member of the team here, creating a safe and welcoming space where people feel comfortable being themselves and can find genuine connections.

I’m an educator with over thirty years’ experience of working with neurodiverse young people and adults. I’ve been fortunate to lead teams of educators at schools in London, Hong Kong, and Sydney, and now I’m working in the beautiful Southern Highlands. Each experience has shown me how much stronger communities become when we embrace diversity.

I’m passionate about inclusive education and love finding ways to support every kind of learner—whether that’s a student who needs extra help, someone who’s neurodiverse, or a gifted student ready for new challenges. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people grow in confidence and discover what they’re capable of.

For me, strong relationships are at the heart of teaching. I believe that every person deserves to feel valued, supported, and encouraged to shine. I also love involvement with local communities, because I know that the best outcomes come when we’re all working together.

I truly believe everyone deserves to be celebrated for who they are, and I’m excited to be part of a community where people can connect, share, and blossom together

Director, Experience Design & Neurodiversity Strategy

Hey, I'm Shamus

Hi, I’m Shamus Hart – a Senior Creative and UX/Product Designer based in Sydney, with years of experience designing complex digital products across digital, mobility and broadcast. My work is all about human-centred design – creating experiences that don’t just look good, but feel good and make life easier in the real world.

I’m also autistic and ADHD, and that’s a really important part of how I move through the world and how I design. I bring both lived neurodivergent experience and technical design skills, which helps me bridge the gap between creativity, accessibility and wellbeing.

Alongside my design career, I’m studying psychology because I’m deeply curious about how people connect, what helps us feel safe, and how environments can either support or overwhelm us.

As a volunteer with Neuro Awesome, I’m contributing in two key ways:

Helping our community better understand how connection happens, and what helps neurodivergent people feel safe, valued and at ease.

Designing and creating tools and resources that make social spaces more accessible and inclusive for ND people and our allies.

I’m passionate about neurodiversity advocacy and I believe in building environments – online and offline – that empower people to show up exactly as they are. With Neuro Awesome, I’m proud to be part of a team creating spaces and resources that honour individuality, reduce stigma and spark genuine connection.

Director, Community & Family Engagement

Hey, I'm Liz

I grew up in the Highlands, started my career as a clerk with what is now Wingecarribee Shire Council, and after many years working in Sydney, I moved back home in 2024. These days I live in Bundanoon with my husband and adult son, and my heart is very much in this community — its people, its systems, and the gaps that far too many families still fall through.

Professionally, I’ve spent more than three decades in administrative and coordination roles across local government, architecture and design, the building and construction sector, kitchen manufacturing and, most recently, retirement living. I worked for 11 years as Receptionist and Lifestyle Co-ordinator at The Cotswolds Retirement Village in North Turramurra, where I helped design and run social, emotional and physical wellbeing programs for residents, coordinated staff, volunteers and guest presenters, and built a strong network of speakers and musicians. Colleagues know me for being highly organised, calm in conflict, warm with people from all walks of life and very committed to good old-fashioned customer service.

My advocacy work is deeply personal. I’m the mum of a 31-year-old son with a late diagnosis of ASD Level 2, dyslexia and depression, and I’ve walked alongside him through school, services, waiting lists and the ongoing realities of adult life as a neurodivergent person. I’ve navigated the NDIS, local organisations, therapists and support services to help him build life skills, social skills and emotional regulation — and I know how exhausting and confusing that journey can be for families.

For years, I could see that neurodivergent adults in the Highlands didn’t have many safe, social spaces that truly understood their needs. So I started a neurodivergent social group for 18–35-year-olds on my own, simply because it was needed. When I later discovered Neuro Awesome and started attending events, I immediately felt the synergy with what I was trying to create — low-pressure, genuinely understanding spaces for ND adults to connect. After seeing that alignment, I was approached to formally join Neuro Awesome so we could work together to create change and a better, safer way for ND adults to meet and belong in our region.

I’ve also been involved with Wingecarribee Community Circles and Autism Connect, helping to build local connection, reduce isolation and make it easier for families to find the right information and support. That work has given me a front-row seat to what ND adults — and their parents and carers — are really going through, beyond the brochures and formal reports.

With Neuro Awesome, my hope is simple: that ND adults and their families in the Highlands feel less alone, more understood, and more supported by a community that truly “gets it.” My guiding belief has always been: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” — treating everyone with the respect, kindness and empathy I would want for my own family.
